The House That Spied On Me

In February 2018, while at Gizmodo Media Group, I did an experiment with technologist Surya Mattu to find out what happens to your privacy when you fill your home with devices connected to the internet.

We outfitted my apartment with 18 different internet-connected devices and built a special router to track how often the devices phoned home and what they were saying about me.

The experience was horrifying, but maybe not for the reasons you would think.

The story won an award from the National Press Foundation for best use of technology in journalism.

Surya Mattu and I gave a TED talk about “The House That Spied On Me” in Vancouver, Canada in April 2018.

Gizmodo produced a video about the series as well.
